Outboard vs inboard4/9/2023 ![]() ![]() For example, a 200HP outboard and a 200HP sterndrive may provide the same performance rating on horsepower, but the sterndrive might have a significantly higher weight than the outboard. Sterndrives give a powerful performance too, but they are a little heavier than the outboards in the same category. Today, outboard motors turn to be a game-changer with the amount of horsepower they can pack into them. It is an essential feature to consider, especially when it comes to choosing a boat engine. Still, a closer look at the engine characteristics can help you make the right choice based on your need. It is not quite challenging to choose the right option for outboard or inboard boats for sale. However, with time, the advancement in technology has reduced the gap between the differences of both. Manufacturers were building them with specific designs and specifications. The only difference that I know of with the safety certificate is that you can't have a gas fridge in a petrol powered boat.Differences Between Sterndrive and Outboard Enginesīefore a few years ago, the choice between these boat motors was easy. Modern four stroke Japanese outboards last for many years. We had a Springer Waterbug with a Honda 15hp for six years and didn't really have much of a problem getting petrol. from the prop.ĥ An outbaord is quieter than a diesel engine. You can replace the engine, gearbox and prop for a couple of thousand instead of 5k for an engine alone.Ĥ It is easier to clear weed etc. The boat becomes more manouverable especially in reverse.ģ. I too have had both and there are some advantages ġ. ![]() That should persuade in favour of the deisel but I think you'd come to that conclusion anyway! There have been cases where thieves have cut part of a boat away to nick a locked on outboard. You don't get nearly the same charging capacity.Ħ. It can cause problems getting a safety cert as the regs are much tighter.Ĥ. It's dangerous keeping petrol onboard particularly when you add LPG into the mix.ģ. Many have said above why but I will summarise the disadvantages of the outboard option:-Ģ. I have done both and wouldn't touch another petrol boat let alone an outboard. One of the problems is that I am disabled but my wife (who hates being in locks) is happy to do the winding and I am happy to sit in the locks! Another problem is that it will have to be cheap. We have had 2 holidays on narrowboats so far and will go again next spring to make sure it is right for us. I don't expect to purchase before next summer as I need lots of time to gather information. I am looking for a small narrowboat probably all steel. It laregly depends on the boat in question, and what kind of sailing you intend to do. Outboards are easier to steal I speak from experience having had one nicked. Most o/b's are 4 stroke now and therefore cleaner and more economical (our ancient two stroke Johnson used to drink a gallon of petrol every hour on the canal). Jap outboard spares can be scandalously expensive. Battery charging is limited, but servicing is easier though not necessarily cheap. Some smaller steel narrowboats use outboards sucessfully. Outboards are good on smaller boats especially glassfible. ![]()
